How do I choose a topic and a question? “Students are encouraged to explore film in an international context”
Topic must focus on film/television and not a literary or historical issue.
Needs to be a substantial topic that’s not too general.
Cannot duplicate other work that is being submitted for the IB programme.
What kind an how many sources do I need?Primary sources: refrences to at least one film (script, screenplay, score, and contact with creators is included).
Secondary sources: relevant sources (articles, reviews, promos, internet material).
Visual materials: do I have to use these?
CriteriaCriteria A:
Specifically film and TV, 4000 words, wide range of sources, and narrow topic.
Criteria B:
Argument with implications and perspectives, reflect own opinions, demonstrate knowledge and understanding.
Criteria C:
Logical, consider new perspectives, evaluate sources, identify film elements, and reference more than one fim.
Criteria D:
Professional presentation of information.
Criteria E:
Create a successful reflection.
Summary: The IB Film Extended Essay is an evaluation of multiple films successfully utilising primary and secondary sources. The essay needs to illustrate knowledge, understanding, perspective, and insightfulness of the topic. The essay should not be one that is written to inform and relay facts, but one to showcase your opinion and offer a new perspective on your topic.
